Imagine If No Miniature Ever Went Out of Production Again

How 3D printing could give tabletop gamers better models, greater choice and a Warhammer future worth wanting

Imagine opening the Warhammer store and finding every model you had ever missed.

Not only the current range. Everything.

The character which vanished fifteen years ago. The vehicle upgrade now changing hands for three times its original price. The obscure unit that still has rules but no model. Alternate weapons, different crews, replacement parts and new poses for an army you have been collecting for years.

No waiting for Games Workshop to revisit the range. No stock alerts. No trawling auction sites because a mould was retired.

You choose the model, pay for it and have an authorised copy produced.

That is the future 3D printing could give tabletop gaming.

It is not really about putting a printer in every spare bedroom. It is about removing the old rule that a miniature needs thousands of buyers before it deserves to exist.

The hobby has always had more ideas than products

Tabletop gaming has never lacked imagination.

What it has lacked is an affordable way to manufacture every good idea.

Injection-moulded plastic remains superb for products that will sell in large numbers. It creates durable and consistent kits, and it is difficult to beat for starter sets, core troops and major releases.

The difficulty comes before the first box is sold.

During the six months ending November 2025, Games Workshop spent £3.7 million on moulding tools and another £3.4 million on manufacturing facilities and equipment. Its Nottingham operation had expanded to 62 injection-moulding machines, while a fourth factory was under construction.

That level of investment makes sense when a kit is expected to sell around the world for years. It makes far less sense for a peculiar artillery vehicle, a forgotten historical regiment or a monster wanted by a few hundred dedicated players.

Every model must survive the same calculation: will it sell enough copies to pay for its tooling, manufacturing, packaging, transport and storage?

Many ideas never make it past that question.

3D printing changes the calculation because it does not require a dedicated production mould. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology says additive manufacturing can radically improve the economics of customised and low-volume products, while reducing the costs associated with inventory, warehousing and obsolete stock.

A designer can therefore take a chance on something unusual.

A minor faction can receive the vehicle it has always been missing. A roleplaying character can resemble the person described on the character sheet. A tank can have the turret options players actually want instead of whichever combination could be squeezed efficiently onto a sprue.

The real promise of 3D printing is not cheaper copies of models we already have.

It is all the models we were never going to get.

Better models are not only about sharper detail

Modern resin printers can reproduce fine faces, armour textures and tiny mechanical details. However, resolution is only part of the improvement.

The more interesting benefit is design freedom.

A component made in a traditional two-part mould must be shaped so it can be removed from that mould. Deep undercuts, enclosed spaces and complex internal forms can force a miniature to be divided into extra pieces.

A printed model does not have to follow the same rules.

Privateer Press demonstrated this when it moved new Warmachine MKIV models to 3D-printed production. Its Tyrant warjack was produced as seven principal parts. The company estimated that the same design would have required at least 15 pieces using its previous moulding methods. Magnet sockets could also be built directly into the shoulders, weapons and head connections.

For the player, that can mean fewer awkward joints, easier weapon swaps and large components which do not need to be chopped apart simply to satisfy the manufacturing process.

Digital production also makes optional parts easier to offer.

A vehicle can have several turrets without each version requiring its own complete boxed kit. A squad can have additional poses. A character can be released with different weapons, heads or equipment rather than being permanently locked to one design.

It also allows products to improve after release. A fragile barrel can be strengthened. An awkward connection can be adjusted. A missing drainage point can be corrected. Every future copy can use the revised design without replacing an expensive physical mould.

A well-made plastic miniature can still be excellent. The point is not that printed models automatically beat plastic ones.

It is that the manufacturing process no longer has to make so many decisions on the designer's behalf.

“Out of production” does not need to mean gone forever

Every long-term tabletop gamer has watched a model disappear.

Sometimes the mould has reached the end of its life. Sometimes production capacity is needed for a newer release. Sometimes the remaining audience is committed but no longer large enough to justify manufacturing another warehouse full of stock.

The miniature vanishes, even though people still want it.

Games Workshop acknowledged in its latest half-year report that several new Kill Team boxes had sold out on launch, describing the task of making “just enough” stock as a constant challenge.

That is the unavoidable weakness of producing stock before knowing exactly how many people will buy it.

On-demand printing reverses the order.

The customer orders the model first. Only then is it manufactured.

Privateer Press has begun applying this idea to Monsterpocalypse. With its manufacturing capacity committed elsewhere, it announced that the older miniature catalogue would move towards official STL releases and print-on-demand production rather than simply being abandoned.

That creates a different sort of back catalogue.

Instead of storing thousands of slow-selling boxes, a publisher can store approved production files. A miniature can remain available for years without occupying warehouse space or requiring another large manufacturing run.

A product might leave the main retail range, but that would no longer have to make it unobtainable.

Imagine what that could mean for games with decades of history. Older armies could remain collectable. Missing units could still be ordered. New players would not be punished simply because they discovered a faction after its original release window.

The miniature would not be rare because a company guessed the demand incorrectly five years earlier.

It would simply be waiting to be made.

This is already happening

Official printable miniatures are no longer confined to independent creators.

Paizo now offers official Pathfinder printable miniatures through Paizo Printables. Subscribers receive new heroes, villains and monsters alongside rules material and access to a growing library of designs.

Steamforged Games launched Warmachine Digital in 2025, offering monthly pre-supported miniatures, alternate characters, terrain, conversion parts and objectives. It also made physical versions of some releases available for customers without printers.

Even more importantly, Steamforged has begun involving retailers. Participating Warmachine stockists can receive files for store terrain and demonstration models, with plans allowing customers without printers to purchase selected printed releases through their local shops.

That is very close to the future many tabletop players would actually use.

The publisher creates the official design. A licensed store or specialist manufacturer produces it. The player receives a properly finished physical miniature.

No home printer is required.

Privateer Press was unusually direct when explaining its own move to additive manufacturing:

“We believe 3D printing is the future.”

That statement was made in 2022. Since then, official subscriptions, downloadable models, complete printable forces and retailer-supported production have all become more common.

The future has not arrived everywhere, but it has certainly started.

Most players should not need to become manufacturers

Owning a printer can be rewarding. For some people, preparing files and mastering the equipment becomes another part of the hobby.

It is not something every gamer should be expected to do.

Many players have no interest in calibrating exposure settings, cleaning vats, washing resin or spending an evening removing supports. They want to build, paint and play with the finished model.

That is where specialist print businesses fit.

The sculptor creates the design and grants the appropriate commercial permission. The printer provides the machines, materials, production knowledge and quality control. The customer receives a physical model without turning miniature manufacturing into a second hobby.

It is a straightforward division of labour.

We do not expect every reader to own a book press. We do not expect every photographer to manufacture their own frames. Digital creation and professional physical physical production already work together across countless industries.

Miniatures do not need to be different.

Games Workshop could lead this change instead of only defending against it

Games Workshop has every right to protect its trademarks, artwork and original miniatures. Counterfeit products and direct reproductions are not the same as independent designs, and no serious argument for 3D printing requires pretending otherwise.

However, Games Workshop’s public-facing position currently discusses 3D printing mainly as an intellectual-property threat. Its legal guidance states that it has a “zero tolerance” policy towards infringement and specifically identifies illegal reproduction through recasting and 3D printing. Its latest financial report also describes active investment in teams and processes used to take action against infringement.

Protecting genuine intellectual property is reasonable.

Treating 3D printing chiefly as a problem to suppress is far less imaginative.

The demand behind alternative miniatures is often not a rejection of Warhammer. Players are usually asking for more of it: another vehicle, a different crew, an old character, an alternate pose or a unit which currently has no satisfactory model.

That demand could be fought indefinitely, or it could be served officially.

Games Workshop does not need to abandon plastic to do that. Its present investment makes clear that physical kits will remain central to the business. The company is expanding its moulding capacity, not winding it down.

A digital range could sit alongside plastic rather than replacing it.

Core troops, starter sets and major releases would continue to arrive as traditional boxed kits. Plastic is efficient at that scale, and plenty of customers enjoy the sprues, packaging and certainty of an official physical release.

Digital and on-demand production could handle everything around them:

  • Retired characters and discontinued units
  • Alternate heads, weapons and poses
  • Vehicle upgrades and conversion parts
  • Battlefield terrain and objective markers
  • Models for specialist games and smaller factions
  • Replacement components for damaged or missing parts

Players with suitable equipment could purchase official personal-use files. Everybody else could order an authorised physical copy from Games Workshop, a local retailer or an approved production partner.

Games Workshop could specify the materials and production standards. It could control the licences, protect its source files and earn revenue from every legitimate copy.

Most importantly, it would give customers an official route to products for which demand plainly exists.

The subscription model is not a wild leap

Games Workshop already runs a paid digital service.

Warhammer+ had approximately 248,000 subscribers in November 2025, up from about 207,000 a year earlier. The service currently provides animation, tutorials and other digital content rather than printable miniatures, but Games Workshop describes it as an integral part of its digital offer and the way it shares its intellectual property.

Adding printable content would not require reinventing the company.

A higher Warhammer+ tier could include a monthly miniature, terrain set or conversion pack. Older models could be sold individually from an official archive. Limited releases could remain available digitally after the physical stock had gone.

A customer might choose between three versions of the same product:

  • An official plastic kit
  • A licensed digital file
  • A professionally printed copy

Each would suit a different customer without making the others obsolete.

That is a far more attractive future than endless arguments over whether printed miniatures should exist at all.

The model you want should have a way to reach the table

3D printing will not replace every plastic kit, and it does not need to.

Its value lies in all the places where mass production struggles: unusual designs, smaller audiences, optional components, discontinued ranges and products which are wanted steadily rather than in enormous launch-day quantities.

For players, that means armies with more character and fewer gaps.

For designers, it means good ideas no longer need permission from a million-pound tooling budget.

For publishers, it means decades of designs can remain commercially useful instead of disappearing into an archive.

Games Workshop can continue treating 3D printing largely as a boundary it must defend.

Or it can recognise that the same technology could give its customers something they have wanted for years: a deeper range, permanent availability and far more freedom to make an army their own.

The next tabletop revolution will still produce physical miniatures.

The difference is that the model you want might no longer need a factory run, a warehouse shelf or thousands of other buyers before it can exist.
